NEW YORK (AP) ? Disappointing earnings results weighed on the stock market in early trading on Thursday, following two steep drops this week.
Shortly after 11:30 a.m., the Dow Jones industrial average was off 46 points at 14,572, a decline of 0.3 percent. The Dow lost 138 points the day before and is down 2 percent for the week.
Morgan Stanley, Pepsi and others joined in the parade of companies turning in quarterly results Thursday. Morgan Stanley sank 5 percent to $20.47 after reporting a drop in earnings and revenue. It made less money from trading bonds and commodities, a common theme for many investment banks.
Ebay's stock sank 5 percent to $53.38 after the online auction company cut its forecast for profits in the current quarter.
Verizon, Pepsi and Union Pacific surged after reporting quarterly results. Verizon Communications' profits beat analysts' predictions as wireless revenue kept rising at a rate that's the envy of the industry. Profits and sales for Pepsi also surpassed estimates. Verizon's stock gained 3 percent to $51.09, while Pepsi climbed 5 percent to $82.78.
Higher shipping rates pushed Union Pacific's profit up 11 percent, and the railroad said it expects shipping to pick up later this year. Union Pacific rose 4 percent to $142.11.
After the closing bell, the tech sector weighs in with earnings from IBM, Google and Microsoft.
The market didn't get any help from economic news early Thursday.
The Labor Department reported that the number of Americans seeking unemployment benefits increased 4,000 last week to 352,000. The slight gain suggests that the sluggish hiring seen in March may not last. Applications are a proxy for layoffs.
Also, the Philadelphia branch of the Federal Reserve reported a slowdown in manufacturing in the mid-Atlantic region. The survey was weaker than economists had been expecting.
In other trading, the Standard & Poor's 500 index fell five points, or 0.3 percent, to 1,547. The Nasdaq composite fell 21 points, or 0.6 percent, to 3,183.
In the market for U.S. government bonds, Treasury prices rose and their yields fell as traders moved money into low-risk assets.
The yield on the 10-year Treasury note slipped back to 1.69 percent, near its lowest level of the year. That's down from 1.70 percent late Wednesday.
Commodities prices held steady following sharp falls earlier this week. Crude oil was little changed at $86 a barrel and copper was down 2 cents at $3.16 a pound. Gold edged up $9 to $1,392 an ounce.
On Monday gold had its biggest plunge in 30 years as U.S. inflation receded and worries escalated that European central banks might start selling gold. Crude has lost $10 a barrel over the past two weeks as the outlook for the global economy weakens and oil supplies remain high.

It may be possible soon to charge cell phones, change the tint on windows, or power small toys with peel-and-stick versions of solar cells, thanks to a partnership between Stanford University and the U.S. Department of Energy's National Renewable Energy Laboratory (NREL).
A scientific paper, "Peel and Stick: Fabricating Thin Film Solar Cells on Universal Substrates," appears in the online version of Scientific Reports, a subsidiary of the British scientific journal Nature.
Peel-and-stick, or water-assisted transfer printing (WTP), technologies were developed by the Stanford group and have been used before for nanowire based electronics, but the Stanford-NREL partnership has conducted the first successful demonstration using actual thin film solar cells, NREL principal scientist Qi Wang said.
The university and NREL showed that thin-film solar cells less than one-micron thick can be removed from a silicon substrate used for fabrication by dipping them in water at room temperature. Then, after exposure to heat of about 90?C for a few seconds, they can attach to almost any surface.
Wang met Stanford's Xiaolin Zheng at a conference last year where Wang gave a talk about solar cells and Zheng talked about her peel-and-stick technology. Zheng realized that NREL had the type of solar cells needed for her peel-and-stick project.
NREL's cells could be made easily on Stanford's peel off substrate. NREL's amorphous silicon cells were fabricated on nickel-coated Si/SiO2 wafers. A thermal release tape attached to the top of the solar cell serves as a temporary transfer holder. An optional transparent protection layer is spin-casted in between the thermal tape and the solar cell to prevent contamination when the device is dipped in water. The result is a thin strip much like a bumper sticker: the user can peel off the handler and apply the solar cell directly to a surface.
"It's been a quite successful collaboration," Wang said. "We were able to peel it off nicely and test the cell both before and after. We found almost no degradation in performance due to the peel-off."
Zheng said the partnership with NREL is the key for this successful work. "NREL has years of experience with thin film solar cells that allowed us to build upon their success," Zheng said. "Qi Wang and (NREL engineer) William Nemeth are very valuable and efficient collaborators."
Zheng said cells can be mounted to almost any surface because almost no fabrication is required on the final carrier substrates.
The cells' ability to adhere to a universal substrate is unusual; most thin-film cells must be affixed to a special substrate. The peel-and-stick approach allows the use of flexible polymer substrates and high processing temperatures. The resulting flexible, lightweight, and transparent devices then can be integrated onto curved surfaces such as military helmets and portable electronics, transistors and sensors.
In the future, the collaborators will test peel-and-stick cells that are processed at even higher temperatures and offer more power.

VATICAN CITY (AP) ? Pope Francis on Saturday named a Spanish Franciscan to be the No. 2 at the Vatican's office for religious orders, his first appointment to the Vatican bureaucracy badly in need of a shakeup.
Jose Rodriguez, who also was elevated to archbishop, replaces U.S. Archbishop Joseph Tobin, who was transferred from the high-ranking Vatican post to a Midwestern U.S. archdiocese following his efforts to mediate tensions between the Vatican and American nuns, who in the view of theological conservatives had become too secular and political.
Rodriquez, 60, is an outsider to the Vatican administration and comes from the world of religious orders, like Francis who is a Jesuit. Rodriguez is well-thought of among the orders, and last year was elected president of an international association that gathers the heads of the male orders. He has been twice elected head of the Franciscans' Friars Minor order, one of the main branches of the Franciscan order founded by St. Francis of Assisi, the pope's namesake.
American nuns have seen the election of a Jesuit pope devoted to the poor as a glimmer of home following a Vatican crackdown under Francis' predecessor, Benedict XVI. The nuns were accused of focusing too much on social justice ? one of Francis' priorities ? at the expense of other church issues, like abortion.
Rodriguez' predecessor, Tobin, is now archbishop of Indianapolis, which has fewer than 230,000 parishioners.
One of the important tasks facing Francis is the reform of the scandal-plagued Curia, or Vatican administration, which decides everything from bishop appointments and liturgy, to parish closings and discipline for abusive priests. Benedict commissioned a report on the Curia for papal eyes only following such scandals as VatiLeaks, in which Benedict's butler leaked the pope's private papers revealing feuding, corruption and cronyism at the highest levels of administration.

?Northwest Portland residents Ginger McCarthy and her husband, Michael, spent what they thought was a perfect day at Mill Pond Park on Sunday with their standard poodle, Coco.
That is, until after a few hours after they returned home and Coco began to act strangely. The dog looked dazed, her movements were jerky and she had trouble walking. ?She looked like she was having a seizure,? McCarthy says.
At DoveLewis Emergency Animal Hospital that evening, McCarthy was shocked to discover that her show-quality poodle was exhibiting the classic signs of marijuana ingestion ? especially after Coco released her bladder on the lobby floor.
Oregon and Washington veterinarians recognize those distinctive symptoms with increasingly frequency, as marijuana ingestion becomes more common at their clinics.
DoveLewis has seen marijuana-related toxicity cases increase from about 11 percent of all toxicity cases in 2011 to nearly 20 percent in 2012 and the first few months of 2013, says communications director Kate Goudschaal. The hospital treated eight cases last month.
At Tanasbourne Veterinary Emergency, Dr. Shawn Thomas estimates he treats at least one to two cases each weekend and about 20 or 30 cases in the last two years ? and that?s likely a low estimate.
?There are very specific clinical signs,? says DoveLewis staff veterinarian Dr. MeiMei Welker. ?They?ll walk in, and we can almost diagnose it by the way that they look. They?re having trouble walking, almost like they?re drunk, and they?re really sensitive to any kind of stimulation.?
Dribbling urine is also a telltale sign.
Dogs can get sick from ingesting it in any form, Welker says, from marijuana leaves (which are less potent) to ?bud butter.?
McCarthy isn?t sure exactly what Coco ingested at the park; all she saw were breadcrumbs, so she suspects Coco consumed either the remains of marijuana-infused baked goods or cigarette butts.
Treatment
Typical treatment involves inducing vomiting, if the dog arrives to the hospital soon enough after ingestion, to remove as much of the substance from the dog?s system as possible.
Veterinarians may then treat with intravenous fluids and activated charcoal, which binds to the THC and helps prevent further absorption.
Complications can arise if a dog consumes enough marijuana to make it vomit, Welker says. If it?s sedated, it runs the risk of suffering from aspiration pneumonia, which happens when vomit is inhaled into the lungs.
?Most of the patients are going to do pretty well, even with minimal treatment, but we do get patients that come in nearly comatose and with a low heart rate,? says Dr. Jonathan Wisniewski, a relief veterinarian at Emergency Veterinary Clinic of Tualatin.
The severity of the reaction is generally dose-dependent, he says.
Wisniewski, who is also an associate veterinarian at the Emergency Veterinary Hospital and Animal Urgent Care in Eugene, has done extensive research on a relatively new therapy for treating severe marijuana toxicity called intravenous lipid emulsion therapy.
The treatment involves injecting fat droplets that bind to the fat-soluble THC and help leach it out of the bloodstream, allowing the animal to excrete it more quickly.
Marijuana toxicity in Washington
Even before Washington voters legalized the possession of marijuana in November, pot has been among the top toxins at Olympia Pet Emergency in Olympia, Wash., says medical director Dr. Blair Burggren.
?I would say it?s safe to assume we get at least one call a day on a dog that either ingested or potentially ingested it,? he says.
Since it was legalized for recreational use, he has noticed a slight increase, primarily in the ingestion of products containing marijuana or THC, such as baked goods.
Statewide, the legalization doesn?t seem to have had a huge impact ? yet ? on pot ingestion in pets.
?I do anticipate it coming down the pike,? says Dr. Donna Mensching, veterinary medical director of Veterinary Poison Emergency Treatment Services, a service of the Washington Poison Center.
She believes it will become more of an issue once the substance is legal to sell.
Mensching is concerned about the impact of ?medibles? ? the cannabis-containing foods that might seem very tempting to dogs. They may consume higher amounts of the substance because it?s in a tasty treat, and the food may contain additional toxins, such as chocolate.
?The thing about dogs is that they have no stop button,? she says. ?They will eat as much as they can of something and as quickly as possible.?
She also worries that once marijuana is sold legally, it might open the market for higher-end versions of the drug, which will likely contain higher contents of THC.
If there is an upside to the legalization, Mensching hopes that it will remove the fear or embarrassment people may have to admitting that their dog ingested pot.
Veterinarians say it?s much better to be forthright so they can treat your pet properly.
There are other conditions that may cause similar symptoms, such as neurological disease or brain tumors, so disclosing that information may save expensive diagnostics such as blood work or an MRI.
?We only want to know for medical reasons. We don?t report them,? Welker says (adding that they won?t judge, either). ?It can really simplify things if they come forward with that information.?
If you do suspect that your pet has ingested marijuana, you should have a veterinarian check it out just to be safe.
And like any toxin, please keep it out of reach of pets.
?Just because the voters of Washington agreed that marijuana is now legalized and acceptable does not mean that it?s safe for your pet,? Burggren says. ?Make sure you?re careful and keep it locked up.?
