Rupert Murdoch was one of the most mentioned names of 2011 after his company; News Corporation found itself in court over a phone hacking scandal in the UK. Now, the mogul behind the company; Rupert Murdoch, who is one of the most hated people in the news industry by many has actually joined the social networking website; Twitter and has started tweeting.

Rupert Murdoch is said to have attracted more than 45,000 followers in the first few days of joining the social networking website. there has been a mixed response from the public since the mogul joined the Twitter website with many of his friends apparently being worried about what he might say and worried that he might get himself in even deeper trouble.

Rupert has already found hi8mself nearing trouble on the social networking website after he tweeted about the bank holiday in the UK saying that Britain?s have too many bank holidays for a broke country. He quickly deleted the tweet before it was found by many and seems to have avoided the worst. It should be noted that there have also been a lot of positivity?s following the moguls Twitter sign up.

Faster-than-light neutrinos: a timeline

2011 has been a busy year for particle physicists. They?ve found a new particle, closed in on the elusive Higgs boson, and witnessed some neutrinos acting pretty strangely, amongst other things. I?m talking, of course, about the faster than light neutrinos detected by the Opera experiment in Italy. They dominated the science headlines for a few days at the end of September and have been popping up every now and then since as scientists try to grapple with the idea that Einstein?s theory of special relativity may not be as watertight as they would like to think.

In order to make sense of the finding, I collected together lots of the coverage and papers concerning the result and had a go with interactive timeline making tool dipity.com. Have a look at the timeline below. You can zoom in on particular weeks and days, to see the detail of who published what and when, or you can zoom out for a broader overview of how the story unfolded. This is very much a work in progress and I plan to add to it as and when new events occur. If there?s something I haven?t included that you think should be on there please let me know in the comments.

All that remains for me to say is happy new year to those already in 2012, and I?ll see the rest of you on the other side.

Pirate-themed cruise ship runs aground in Florida

CLEARWATER, Florida?? Authorities in Florida say a Pirate-themed cruise ship carrying about 100 passengers has run aground on New Year's Eve.

Public safety officials in Clearwater said Saturday night that crews responded at the Memorial Causeway Bridge when the cruise ship, known as the Pirate's Ransom, ran aground. A second vessel attempted to take some of the passengers to shore also ran aground. Police and fireboats were taking passengers to shore late Saturday night.

A city press release says a 77-year-old woman was examined at the scene but refused treatment. There were no immediate reports of injuries.

Authorities said fog is believed to have been a factor in the ships running aground. Clearwater is located on Florida's Gulf coast.

The return of a Baby Jesus, stolen from a Nativity scene, is being requested by a Roslyn Harbor church, Nassau County police said Friday.

The figure was probably taken from in front of St. Mary's Church, at 110 Bryant Ave., between 7 p.m. Thursday and 7 a.m. Friday, police said.

The theft is classified as a larceny, police said, but church officials are "only requesting the safe return...
